Justin sat in his booth the way he did every day, bored out of his mind. He only allowed the frustration to build to a certain point for fear that he would come to his senses and quit. Each time he felt his limit approaching, he would remind himself that this job gave him the money to buy the supplies he needed to further his passion to be an artist. He had been in this god-awful town for two years and pounded the pavement to get people to look at his work. There had been many positive comments but nobody was prepared to go out on a limb for him and give him a chance.
As the passengers filed past his booth, they pushed their change forward and waited for the token to be pushed back at them. This was as exciting as it got. Coin in, token out, coin in, token out, coin in, token out, the boredom that Justin felt was overwhelming. He glanced at the clock for the umpteenth time and was grateful his shift was almost over. Fifteen minutes to go and he could leave and do something really important.
Justin had an appointment with someone at four. She ran a gallery downtown and she'd seen some of the work that he’d donated to a GLC fundraising event. The secretary that made the appointment said she liked his grasp of the human form, which pleased Justin immensely.
He took a deep breath. He thought he was good at that too. Actually he was proud of his grasp as well. Justin had been ‘out’, to himself anyway, since the last year of high school. One day it was just too hard to hide anymore. He completed his education on the The Strip in New York. One that he was more than pleased to discover he was good at. Since then, it was hard to keep the faces straight. In truth, he didn’t want to. A fuck was a fuck and it cleared his head and settled his nerves so he could concentrate on the more important things in life like propelling his art career forward.
Justin was determined and dedicated to realizing his dream. Nothing was going to stand in his way.
Now the ‘I am independent and I don’t need anyone’ speech that he gave himself regularly was over, the old doubt’s started to creep into his head. He wished he really did believe all the crap he tried to feed himself. He attended enough positive thinking seminars to know that he had to repeat that he was confident at least a dozen times a day. He was bit put out that he didn’t seem to believe himself because he never really felt any more confident. Justin sighed and looked at the time again. Thank god, he thought.
He closed his window and lifted the cash draw out, depositing it in the manager’s rack on his desk. He signed out and left.
Justin stood on the platform waiting for his train. He knew all the faces of the people that he stood amongst every day. In the early days, he studied each one of them, but now the faces were so familiar, they were as boring as his job. The crowd jostled him down to the end of the platform, just like every other day but today someone pushed him from behind and he stumbled forward. The momentum from the shove took Justin by surprise. He heard a muffled I’m sorry and then a woman scream. Justin looked towards the noise.
“He fell on the tracks,” she cried out.
Justin looked down and saw an unconscious man lying on the tracks. He could hear the train approaching. Without thinking, he dropped his portfolio and jumped down. He gathered the lifeless body into his arms and rolled with it off the track into the median strip where they would be safe. He could still hear the screams of the other patrons over the noise of the train. The train didn’t stop until all the carriages were past the station.
A man jumped from the driver’s compartment and ran towards them. “Thank god, they radioed for me to go through. It was too late for me to stop. Are you alright?”
Justin sat up and checked for broken bones. He looked up at the platform, still shocked that he jumped down to save this guy. “Yeah, I‘m okay,” he said meekly. He looked at the guy. “I don’t know about him though. We need an ambulance,” Justin called out.
“Justin,” a voice called out to him from the platform above. “Fuck, are you okay?”
Justin looked up. It was his boss with three of the other workers from the next shift. “I’m fine. Is the ambulance coming? He’s hurt,” Justin called back.
The ambulance arrived in record time and the paramedics examined the unconscious man. They decided it was safe to move him and lifted him onto a stretcher. “Are you coming?” One of them asked.
Justin nodded. The reality of what he did was suddenly too much. He felt dazed as he rode in the back of the ambulance to the hospital. His head was hurting now and his hip felt like it was broken, the discomfort was so intense. Justin looked at the man beside him and sighed loudly. Without the cut on his head and the lump, this guy was beautiful. Justin searched his memory for other occasions that he had seen him. No, he had never seen him before. He didn’t look like a train catcher. His clothes were more the limmo type. Justin studied the man’s face carefully, noting his strong jaw and chiseled features. His hair was a soft chestnut color and even though it was mussed up from the fall, the haircut was immaculate. He heard a voice from behind him.
“You look like you really care about him. I’m sure he’ll be okay, try not to worry.”
Justin tried to smile and then realized that he was sitting close to this guy with his palm cupping the man’s face. He pulled his hand away immediately.
“It’s okay to love someone,” the woman’s voice reassured him. “It doesn’t matter what some people say,” she shook her head.
“I dddon’t lllllove hhhim,” Justin stuttered.
“Don’t be embarrassed. I’m not homophobic. You don’t need to hide your feelings. There is nothing to be ashamed about,” the woman smiled. “My son is gay and he looks at his lover the same way.”
Justin looked into her eyes and could see the understanding and kindness behind them. He thought about his own mother who hadn’t spoken to him in eight years because he was gay. His father had thrown him out of the house because of it and now this woman was giving him the kindness and understanding that he wished had come from them. Justin missed his family, such as they were. His sister would be eighteen now. Nearly the same age he was when they threw him out of their lives. The ambulance came to a halt and the back doors opened. The stretcher was lifted down and the woman who traveled with him held out her hand to help him down.
Justin followed the stretcher into the emergency room still dazed.
“Just sit here with me while they examine him,” a hand guided him to a row of seats. “Can I get you something to drink?” she asked.
“No thanks,” Justin choked out.
She slipped her arm into his and smiled. “He’ll be okay, I’m sure of it.”
Justin closed his eyes; his head was really hurting now. He wanted to go to the bathroom so he stood up and the room began to spin. He took a step forward and slumped to the floor.
********
Justin blinked repeatedly as the brightness of the light was nearly blinding. His eyes adjusted and he opened them slowly. A red headed woman was holding his hand.
“So, you’re awake,” she smiled. How are you feeling Justin?” she asked.
“Who are you?” Justin stammered.
“I’m Debbie, Brian’s Mom, well almost his Mom anyway. He’s been like my son for nearly twenty years now. You were very brave saving him like that, a real knight in shining armor,” she smiled.
“Brian?” Justin managed to get out.
“He still hasn’t regain consciousness but they hope he will wake up soon. Thanks to you, he’s alive. We are so grateful to you,” the woman pulled him into her arms and held him tightly. Justin was only surprised for an instant before melting into her arms enjoying their warmth. Since living here for the last two years, he couldn’t remember a time when someone had actually held him and meant it. Since he pulled that guy off the tracks Justin had felt more caring than he had the whole time he’d been in this town. It must have been nice growing up with Debbie as his Mom. Her voice jolted him back to reality. “The doctor said I should call him when you woke up,” she smiled. “He just wants to check you over and if everything is okay, you can come and see Brian with me.”
“I don’t want to intrude,” Justin said softly.
“You won’t be intruding,” she said horrified at the suggestion she would try to keep them apart. “Brian will want to see you when he wakes up.” She couldn’t help wondering how Brian was in a relationship with someone so timid. It didn’t matter. Brian was finally settling down and Justin seemed like a nice man. He was younger than Brian usually was attracted to but the paramedic said they were definitely in love. When Debbie got the news about Brian’s accident she was thrown. Brian Kinney never caught the train. She was amazed that he even knew where the station was. When the paramedic said that Justin worked at the station, it made sense. He must have been visiting Justin. The woman had told her that she was touched to see how Justin felt about Brian. The way Justin had hovered at Brian’s side; she could tell they were in love.
“If you don’t mind, I would like to see him, and you know, see for myself that he’s okay,” Justin smiled.
The doctor gave Justin a clean bill of health and Debbie dragged him to Brian’s room as fast as she could.
Justin rounded the corner and walked slowly in behind Debbie. There were other people in the room chatting.
Debbie announced. “Everyone, this is Justin. Justin, this is some of Brian’s family.”
Justin smiled and looked at his feet.
A weathered looking man stepped forward and took Justin’s hand and smiled. “I’m Vic, Debbie’s brother. I’m pleased to finally meet you Justin. We are all so grateful that you were there to look after Brian.”
Justin smiled, not quite knowing what to say.
A short, dark headed man, stepped forward next. “I’m Michael, Brian’s best friend since high school. I don’t understand why he never mentioned you to me. It doesn’t make any sense. Brian would have told me if he had someone special in his life,” Michael complained.
“Michael Novotny, you stop that right now. Brian hasn’t even seen you for four months and this is the reason why. Your constant whining was driving him insane. Justin, ignore Michael,” Debbie glared at her son.
Michael huffed back to stand at Brian’s side.
“Michael, step back and let Justin in there. Brian is his boyfriend and he is entitled to be with him.”
Michael glared at Justin but stepped back to allow him some space.
Justin hesitated. “It’s okay Debbie, Brian should be with his family, I’m gonna go.”
Debbie ran to his side to stop him. “The doctor said that you should speak to him. It will help him come around faster. Please Justin, you are a part of this family now and Brian needs you. Come on everyone? Let’s give them some privacy for a while.” She ushered everyone out of the room and closed the door behind them.
Justin couldn’t believe what was happening. Debbie told him he was family. The words were so good to hear but it wasn’t true. He was lying to these people by not telling them the truth. He wanted to, but with Debbie, he couldn’t get a word in edgeways.
He sat down next to Brian’s bed and looked at the sleeping man. He caught himself sighing, Brian was breathtaking. Justin could feel his cock jump as his eyes lingered over Brian’s strawberry colored lips. Without thinking he traced his finger across them and then slid it down into the cleft in Brian’s chin. Handsome wasn’t enough to describe the man before him. He traced along Brian’s jaw and up around his ear. Justin brushed Brian’s hair back off his forehead. His hair was silky soft.
Debbie watched through the glass panel in the door, smiling. Finally Brian was going to settle down. It was about time. She could see why Brian had fallen for Justin. He was sweet and kind and very thoughtful of others. She hoped that Brian wasn’t just using him like with so many other men in the past but she didn’t think so. Justin was different and it was very clear to her that he was perfect for Brian.
Justin looked up at raised voices in the hall. The door flew open and a willowy blonde ran to Brian’s bedside. She looked familiar but Justin couldn’t place where he had seen her before. He saw so many people working at the station. After a while everyone looked familiar. A shorter woman with a child on her hip followed with Debbie on their tails.
“Lindz, Mel, this is Justin, Brian’s boyfriend,” Debbie smiled.
“Brian’s what,” the blonde woman shrieked.
“Shhhhh,” Debbie hushed. “Justin, this is Lindsay and Melanie. Has Brian told you about them?”
Justin shook his head. “Who’s this,” he smiled, pointing to Gus.
Lindsay spun around to face Debbie. “Brian doesn’t do boyfriends,” she smiled.
“Well he does now,” Debbie shot back. “He was at the station visiting Justin when somehow he fell onto the tracks. Justin jumped off the platform and saved him just in the nick of time before a train ran over him. I’m sure Brian will be glad that Justin is his boyfriend now if he wasn’t already before. What an enormous stamp of approval by fate,” she grinned. “Justin, this is Gus, Brian’s son. Gus, this is Justin, he’s Daddy’s friend,” she smiled at the little boy.
“So how long has the asshole been out,” Melanie snarled.
“Mel,” Debbie cried out.
“You don’t really expect me to care do you?”
“Well, maybe you’ll care when the checks stop coming,” Debbie glared at her.
“We don’t need his money,” she growled.
“Doesn’t stop you cashing them though, does it,” Debbie spat back. “No wonder Brian stays away. The way you speak to him is disgraceful. Gus is his son and he isn’t even welcome in his own child’s life. You should be ashamed of yourself Lindsay, no wonder Brian doesn’t have any contact with you and more.”
“He just doesn’t give a damn about his son,” Melanie growled again.
“Why do you stop Brian from seeing his son?” Justin asked. “If he is supporting him, what’s your problem?” he couldn’t believe this hateful dyke was keeping Brian from his son. “If he didn’t care he wouldn’t be supporting Gus.”
“He’s the slut of Pittsburgh. What sort of example is he to a child?” she spun around to glare at Justin.
“And you seem shallow and nasty to me, happy to take what you can get but not prepared to give at all. What sort of example is that for a child?” Justin spat back, the words coming out before he realized.
Mel tried to speak but no words came out. She wasn’t used to anyone challenging her, anyone except Brian of course. “How dare you say that to me? Who do you think you are? You are nothing more than some trick. Brian is incapable of caring for anyone, including his son,” she smiled.
Justin despised her already, poor Brian, having to deal with such a bitch. “Kids have an amazing ability to sort things out themselves,” Justin smiled back at her. “When Gus is older, he will resent you for the time with his father that you robbed him of and when he finds out you took his father’s money and refused to let Brian see him, he will hate you.” Justin couldn’t stop himself. The words were tumbling out before he could stop them.
“Come on Lindsay, let’s get out of here,” she ordered.
Lindsay glared at her. “Gus needs to spend some time with Brian, he could have died today. I don’t want Gus to lose his father,” she cried out.
Melanie grabbed her arm. “I said, let’s go,” she insisted.
Lindsay shook her off. She took Gus from Melanie’s arms and handed him to Justin. “Do you want to hold him?” she looked at Mel again. “I’ll see you at home later.” She turned her back and held Brian’s hand.
Justin could tell Melanie was furious. She stood staring at Lindsay in disbelief and stormed out of the room.
Debbie slipped her arm around Justin’s waist as he chatted to Gus. “Good for you kiddo, I can see why Brian loves you,” she grinned at Justin.
Justin smiled. He was glad he put that bitch in her place. Even though he was asleep at least Brian had his son by his side for however short a time. It must have been awful for Brian to be pushed out of his son‘s life, Justin thought. He sat down on the floor with Gus and smiled. “I like your car,” he smiled at the sports car in the little boy’s hand.
Gus smiled at him. “My Daddy gave it to me. He has a big one just like it. Will he wake up soon? I want him to play with me.”
“I’m not sure Gus. Daddy had an accident today and he needs to rest for a while.”
“Will you play with me till he wakes up?” Gus looked pleadingly into Justin’s eyes.
Shit. Poor kid, he looks so much like Brian. Same hair and the face is almost identical, I wonder if Brian’s eyes are hazel too. Lindsay’s are blue, so Brian must have hazel eyes. It’s like looking into a mirror, they were so much alike. Justin smiled at Gus. “Sure I’ll play with you.”
“Daddy is really still and his head’s got a boo boo. Does it hurt?” Gus asked.
“Not while he’s asleep.”
“Then I hope he stays asleep until its better, Gus smiled. “I don’t want Daddy to hurt.” He pulled up his trouser leg and showed Justin his knee. It was freshly skinned in the last few days. “My boo boo hurts a lot.”
Justin automatically bent down and kissed it, the way his mother used to when he was small. “Is that better?”
Gus smiled. “You kiss Daddy’s too. It will make him feel better too.”
Justin smiled. “I’ll do it later Gus.”
“No, Daddy’s head is hurting now, please Jussin stop Daddy from hurting.” The little boy started to cry. “I’ll come with you, don’t be scared.” He held out his hand to help Justin up.
Justin took it and slowly rose from the floor. He walked to the opposite side of the bed to where Lindsay was standing, bent over and kissed Brian’s forehead gently. He smiled at Gus. “There.”
“Now Daddy will get better fast,” Gus smiled. “I have Daddy’s picture in my room. Do have a picture of Daddy in your room, Jussin?”
Justin smiled. “Yes,” he lied.
Gus looked happy with his answer. He walked to the other side of the bed and took his mother’s hand. “Jussin is my new friend, Mommy.”
Lindsay smiled. Justin was great with Gus. Brian had really hit the jackpot with this one, she liked him a lot and Gus was obviously taken with him. She looked back at Brian’s lifeless body in the bed. Oh Brian, I’m so sorry, I let Mel keep you away from your son. You could have been taken away from us today and we would have lost you forever. Wake up soon, so you can forgive me, she begged silently. In the past, Brian and Lindsay were always close. They attended college together and even though they were both gay, the closeness they shared was enviable. When she decided to have a child, Brian, was of course her only choice. Melanie had never liked Brian, always jealous of their relationship and as soon as Gus was born she jumped into high gear to prove that Brian was a bad influence on their son. Lindsay couldn’t believe how she could have allowed it to get to this. Brian may have died thinking that she didn’t want him to see his son. Even though they treated him badly, Brian was very generous with Gus and Justin was right…. they took the money and still treated him like shit. She squeezed Brian’s hand. She wanted him to wake up so she could make things right again. “I want Justin and Mommy to be friends too,” she smiled at Justin.
Justin liked her. He didn’t quite understand why Lindsay had allowed Brian to be pushed out of his son’s life but he could see that the feelings she had for him were real. “I hope we can be friends too,” he smiled. He looked at his watch. It was nearly nine. He looked over at Debbie who was positively beaming. “I need to go home and shower, I still have track all over me,” he laughed. “I need to get some sleep, my shift starts at three.”
“You are going to work tomorrow,” Debbie said surprised.
“We are really short staffed at the moment. There is some sort of flu going around and everyone is sick. I can’t take the day off and leave them short anymore,” Justin explained.
“Will I see you here after work,” Debbie asked.
“I’ll come by on my way home,” Justin smiled. “I finish at noon.”
Debbie linked her arm into Justin’s and kissed him softly on the cheek. “I’ll see you tomorrow, sweetie and don’t worry about him, he’ll be fine. Look what he has to wake up to,” she smiled and nodded to Lindsay and Gus. “Thanks to you. Now go get some sleep.”
Justin found himself smiling again. He hadn’t smiled so much in years. There had never been anything to smile about before. He grabbed a cab outside the hospital and went back to his apartment. As he walked through the door and saw the empty rack just inside, he thought of his portfolio. He’d dropped it on the station when he jumped off the platform. Oh God, his appointment at the Bloom Gallery. Well that was a giant fuck up, he hadn’t even called there was so much commotion. Another perfectly good opportunity down the drain, he sighed. Justin stripped off his clothes and stood under the shower. The water beating down on him made him notice exactly how sore he really was. There were already faint signs of a very colorful display of bruises that he would be sporting the next day. When he dived off the platform, he must have landed on the track, oh well. At least Brian was okay. He turned off the water and climbed into bed. Shit it was nearly eleven and he had to get up at one. Justin smiled when he thought about Debbie. She was wonderful and it felt great when she hugged him. Vic was nice too although he wasn’t sure about Michael. He suddenly realized he was frowning. No he was sure; he didn’t like Michael at all. He wondered how someone so whiny could be the son of someone so nice. Lindsay was cool too and Gus was great. Brian would be pleased when he woke up.
He wished it wasn’t so late. It would be nice to sketch Brian with his perfect features. His jaw was so strong and masculine but there was still a softness to his face that made him almost pretty. Justin felt his cock twitch again. He reached for the lube as he imagined Brian’s face with Gus’ eyes.
********
The next day at work was at least a little more interesting. People kept coming and congratulating him on his bravery. Instead of being invisible, he was a hero and people wanted to talk to him about it. The attention, by the end of his shift, was making him uncomfortable. Justin wanted to put the whole thing behind him. He felt like he would be intruding if he went back to the hospital today. He looked up as someone called his name and saw Vic smiling at him. “Ohhhh, um hi,” he stammered.
“Hi, yourself,” Vic said. “I know you didn’t get much sleep last night, so I thought I would pick you up and take you to the hospital.”
Justin knew Vic was just being thoughtful. Now he would have to go, he couldn’t be rude and he did want to check on Brian.
“Have you eaten?”
“No yet, it was busy today, we were three collectors down”
“Debbie has lasagna for you and Gus has brought a box of toys for you to play with him,” he laughed. “It was a good thing you did about Gus yesterday. They are back at the hospital today, so Melanie didn’t talk Lindsay out of Brian being in his son’s life. He’ll be thrilled when he wakes up. He’s been sad for a long time about his son but nothing he tried worked. Debbie told me about what you said to Melanie. She must have been so pissed when she left,” Vic laughed.
Justin smiled. “She didn’t look pleased.”
“Good for you. It was about time someone said it. Mel has been a total bitch about everything. Its not that Lindsay doesn’t care about Brian, it’s just that when someone is at you all the time, sometimes it’s just easier to keep the peace. Lindsay knows now what she was doing was wrong and I think Mel will find it more difficult to separate Brian from his son from now on,” Vic smiled. “What time do you knock off?”
Justin looked at the clock on the wall. “Now, he smiled.”
“Good then let’s go.”
Justin gathered his stuff together. He was looking forward to seeing Gus again. Someone had handed in his portfolio, thank god. He struggled to pick everything up.
“Here, I’ll carry that for you,” Vic offered, taking the portfolio case from Justin’s hands.
“Thanks,” Justin smiled. “I thought I lost it yesterday. I was on my way to an interview when Brian fell onto the tracks. I just dropped it and swan dived off the platform after him. I’m so glad someone handed it in.”
“Then I guess you didn’t make your interview then?”
Justin shook his head. “It just wasn’t meant to be, I guess. I didn’t even call so they won’t be rescheduling. Oh well,” Justin sighed.
“So you’re an artist?”
“Trying to be, but its hard to get anyone to notice you when you start out. Someone saw my work at GLC and organized the interview yesterday,” Justin said sadly.
“Which Gallery was it?”
“The Bloom Gallery, they have a great reputation…..” Justin’s voice trailed away wistfully. “Anyway, something else will come up. The important thing is that Brian will be okay and then there’s Gus and you and Debbie, my time wasn’t wasted. I wouldn’t trade it,” Justin smiled.
Vic smiled but didn’t say anything as they walked to the car. Justin was a sweet kid. “How old are you, Justin?” Vic asked. He couldn’t shake off the thought that Justin was a lot different that the type of men that Brian usually hooked up with.
“Twenty six,” Justin smiled. He added quickly. “I know I look sixteen,” he laughed.
Vic laughed too and was relieved. “You’ll be glad you look younger when you’re fifty and only look thirty.”
“I guess but it’s hard to get people to take me seriously when you’re an artist that looks like a teenager.”
“It must be,” Vic smiled.
They chatted happily all the way to the hospital. When they arrived, Debbie heated up Justin’s lasagna and made him eat. It was nice being part of a family again. He knew he should tell them the truth but he was just so swept away by them. This was the family that he always dreamed about. He played with Gus for hours. They were coloring when Lindsay looked down and noticed Justin’s sketch.
“Justin, that’s great,” she smiled.
“Thanks,” Justin said quietly.
“Have you ever thought about doing anything with your talent? I used to be an art teacher. You have a wonderful grasp on the human form,” she smiled.
“Thanks.”
Vic smiled. “Lindz, Justin is an artist. He was on his way to an appointment yesterday but saving Brian got in the way and he missed it. By the time he saved Brian, passed out when he got to the hospital and all the craziness calmed down, he didn’t get a chance to call. Do you think he should ring today and apologize? Would they give him another chance, do you think?”
“Galleries are funny places; they expect an artist to be so dedicated that nothing will stand in the way of their art,” Lindsay shook her head sadly. “Excuses, even good ones don’t really cut it.”
“It doesn’t matter,” said Justin sadly. “Brian was more important.”
Lindsay smiled. “Which gallery?” she asked.
Vic grinned. “The Bloom Gallery,” he laughed.
Lindsay was startled. “Justin, was your appointment four o’clock?”
Justin nodded, not really knowing what was going on.
“He has his book here,” Vic smiled.
“Oh Justin, may I see?” Lindsay said excited.
“Sure.” He started to stand up.
Vic said. “I’ll get it” and handed it to Lindsay.
She opened it and turned the pages slowly.
Justin looked at everyone’s faces and didn’t understand what was happening.
Lindsay paused at a few pieces and smiled before continuing. “I like your style,” she remarked.
“Thanks.” So much attention from everyone in the room was making him uncomfortable.
Gus had wandered over to Brian’s bed and was climbing up to sit with his Dad. “Mommy?” he said.
“In a minute Gus,” she smiled, not looking up. “Mommy is busy at the moment, wait a minute.”
Gus waited as he was told.
Lindsay turned to the last page and looked up, smiling. “Justin, we are having an emerging artist’s show on the twenty-fifth of this month. I would love you to participate.”
“I don’t understand,” Justin said confused.
Vic smiled. “Lindsay manages the Bloom gallery. Your appointment must have been with her.”
Justin’s heart began to pound. This wasn’t happening, he couldn’t believe it. All the months that he had been trying to get someone to take him seriously and the moment was finally here. All his dreams were coming true.
“Mommy?” Gus said again.
“Hang on darling. So Justin, are you interested?” she smiled.
“Am I ever,” Justin said. He was so excited, he could barely talk.
“That’s great,” she smiled. “I think your work will be a wonderful addition to the show.”
“Mommy?”
“What is it honey? It’s not polite to keep calling out when I’ve asked you to wait. Mommy is talking to Justin, baby,” she smiled at her son. “What is it?”
“Daddy’s awake,” Gus smiled.
