Justin Taylor was twenty six years old and working in Rome, one of the most romantic cities in the world. He’d come to Italy when he finished college with dreams of being an artist but after six months, when his money ran out, he needed a job. Justin met Jeremy Sherwood at an art show and they hit it off immediately. Justin had a public relations background and Jeremy said that he needed someone with Justin’s skills. Jeremy headed up the Rome office for an American magazine. It was their job to provide an Italian perspective on fashion, decorating and lifestyle. It was an easy job; everything was so laid back here. There were never any deadlines or pressure and even though in the beginning Justin continued to pursue his art, as time went on he just settled in and relaxed like everyone else. They all socialized a lot. It was part of their jobs to be well connected. It was an enviable lifestyle. The people at home had no concept of the intimate dealings with aristocracy, the parties, the homes…. It was his life and he loved it.

Justin walked through the park on his way to work, like he did every day. It was beautiful at this time of year. The days were warm and the fifteen minutes to the office was his time to just think of nothing. Justin called it his grateful time of day. There was no pressure and he could enjoy the morning.

He smiled and greeted everyone by name when he arrived. His first job was to make coffee. Jeremy wasn’t a good morning person so coffee always helped to get him going. He opened his office and Jeremy was asleep at his desk. Justin smiled. When he left last night, Jeremy promised him he was leaving soon. He must have been caught up on something and fallen asleep. Justin gently rubbed Jeremy’s back. “Baby, are you awake? Its ten fifteen and you have a call from New York soon.” Justin bent over and kissed him on the ear softly.

“Mmmm,” Jeremy moaned. “I don’t know why I fall asleep here. It always kills my back,” he complained.

Justin smiled. “Did you ring the little woman?”

Jeremy rolled his eyes and Justin assumed that was a no. He picked up the phone and dialed. It rang about ten times before it answered. “Its Justin, Mr. Sherwood fell asleep at his desk again, could you let Mrs. Sherwood know that he is okay? Thanks,” Justin smiled. He hung up the phone as Jeremy pulled him onto his lap.

“She’s asleep, I don’t know why you bother,” he laughed.

“Because, if I lived with you, I’d be worried if you didn’t come home and I didn’t know where you were. It doesn’t hurt to make a call.”

Jeremy pulled Justin close and kissed him. “You are what I need,” he murmured into Justin’s mouth between kisses.

Justin could feel how hard Jeremy was as his morning hard on pressed against him. He felt Jeremy slipping down his pants. He looked at the clock. “New York in ten minutes,” Justin reminded him.

Jeremy kissed him again. “This won’t take ten minutes.” he lifted Justin up high enough to pull his pants down completely and positioned him over his cock. “I want to be inside you,” he moaned. He crashed his mouth over Justin’s hard and lowered him onto his cock.

“Oh god,” Justin cried out as he felt Jeremy fill him. He wished Jeremy was more into the niceties like preparation and foreplay. In the beginning they would fight about it but five years down the road, he accepted that was just the way Jeremy was.

“Now,” Jeremy sighed.

Justin nodded and leaned on the arms of the chair for support. Justin rode him and after five minutes he felt Jeremy reach for his cock to pump it. They came together with Jeremy crying out as he pumped his load into Justin. After a minute, Justin felt Jeremy kiss his neck.

“That’s better,” Jeremy sighed. The phone rang on queue. Justin grabbed it. “Mr. Sherwood’s office, yes, please hold for a moment.” Justin handed Jeremy the phone and while he conducted business with Head Office, Justin stood up separating himself from Jeremy’s still hard appendage. He cleaned Jeremy up while he talked, zipped him up and then walked to the bathroom to shower. They had not used condoms for a long time now. He knew Jeremy was negative and didn’t have sex with anyone but him. He was in the closet, a happily married man of twenty years. Jeremy didn’t even sleep with Annabel anymore. They had been monogamous from two weeks after he started work there. It was a comfortable relationship that suited both of them. Justin cared about Jeremy. They’d been together for a long time.

By the time he returned, Jeremy was just hanging up the phone. “They are sending someone to take over Andrew’s job,” Jeremy announced.

“I thought we were going to replace him with a local,” Justin said.

“So did I but this came from the top,” Jeremy shrugged. “His name is Brian Kinney. I’ve never heard of him.”

“Neither have I, maybe he’s new?” Justin suggested.

“He’s senior, the same level as me. He’ll be taking over Andrew’s stuff but he won’t be reporting to me. He reports directly to Gabe in New York. They want us to give him our complete cooperation. Something must be going on….”

“Are you worried?” Justin asked as he poured the coffee.

“A little, I’m supposed to be the director here and now some guy will be turning up who can do anything he wants and I don’t know anything about him. Sounds strange to me; that’s all,” Jeremy sighed.

“Do you think they are trying to squeeze you out?”

“I hope not but if they are, this guy sounds like he has the power to do it,” Jeremy shrugged.

“You are great at your job,” Justin reassured his lover, kissing him on the cheek. “When he arrives, he couldn’t possibly set up a network like yours. It’s taken years to establish. Don’t worry, your connections are solid.”

“You’re right,” Jeremy smiled. “Is Emmett nearly ready to go home?”

Justin smiled. “He is so excited because was sure he would die in Rome, an old maid. I can’t believe it myself, Emmett going home to get married.”

“Do you want to get married?” Jeremy asked.

Justin laughed. “I can’t, my boyfriend is already married.”

“You know what I mean,” Jeremy scolded.

“Are you offering to leave Annabel?”

Jeremy pulled Justin close. “You know I can’t. The New York brass are conservative, the magazine would never leave me in my position if I was gay. We need Annabel so I can stay here with you.”

“I know, I was only kidding. We had better do some work. You have a lunch date with Antonio today at the Gallery,” Justin reminded him as he wriggled out of Jeremy’s grasp.

“Okay, where’s the Constantine file?” Jeremy asked.

“I’ll find it,” Justin smiled.

Emmett repacked his last suitcase for the tenth time and everything still didn’t fit. He’d lived in Rome for six years and couldn’t believe how much more he had now than when he came. “Teddy,” he called out.

A few minutes later Ted poked his head around the door. “You screamed,” he said dryly.

Emmett didn’t notice Ted’s tone was dripping with sarcasm. “Can you sit on this for me?”

Ted shook his head. It was too easy sometimes. He decided not to waste a perfectly good comeback on Emmett who wasn’t paying attention. Ted smiled; he’d worked for Alistair for too long, he thought.

Alistair McClaine was a semi reclusive author of considerable note who fled the US for a more relaxed life in Rome. He had a string of best sellers to his credit but always declined to go home, usually saying hell would freeze over before he ever stepped on American soil again. He was quick witted and highly intelligent, known for his acid tongue in interviews. Only the bravest or the most foolhardy of journalists ever placed themselves in close proximity to Alistair, he was a known asshole of the sarcastic variety. Ted saw a more relaxed and sometimes even a vulnerable man. He had worked for him for so long that Alistair even respected Ted. In the early days, he terrorized Ted as well but it didn’t take long for Ted to understand who he was and in a time he gained Alistair’s respect. Ted never found himself the target of his boss’s venom. There were some days where Ted actually liked him but he was sworn to secrecy that it was even possible. Alistair felt his image as an asshole was essential.

“Sitting on it won’t help; you will just break the zippers. You need to either get another bag or take some things out,” Ted announced.

“I can’t,” Emmett complained. “I need everything. I can’t cut back any further and I already have too many cases.”

Ted was a creature ruled by logic and Emmett by feelings. Ted knew that Emmett would need to see the problem for himself. He tried to sit on the suitcase but it still was at least a foot open.

“What if I give you the other suitcase to hold, that will make you heavier,” Emmett smiled.

“Fine,” Ted agreed. There was no point objecting. He sat on the suitcase, nursing the other case on his lap. Of course the suitcase still wouldn’t close.

“I don’t think it is gonna close,” Emmett said finally.

“Maybe if you give me something else to hold,” Ted suggested. He couldn’t resist.

“No,” Emmett said. “It won’t work,” he said sadly. “There is just too much in there,” he sighed.

Thank God, thought Ted. He was grateful Emmett had reached his conclusion so quickly. He could recall many occasions where Emmett’s revelation hadn’t occurred for considerably longer.

“Thanks anyway, Teddy. I’ll pull it all out and start again,” Emmett sighed.

Oh well, Ted thought. “Did Drew ring last night?” He asked.

Emmett smiled. “Yes and he told me he loved me again. I still can’t believe he wants me.”

“The question should be do you want him,” Ted sighed.

“He was the reason I came here. Of course I want him. I was broken hearted when he wouldn’t come out so we could be together. Now that his wife has left him, he’s decided to be honest about who he is,” Emmett paused. “Teddy, he wants me. I still can’t believe it,” he smiled.

Ted hugged his friend. “He was crazy to not want you the first time.”

“I wish you and Justin could come home for the ceremony,” Emmett sighed.

“You know we’ll be thinking about you. I can’t leave Rome until Alistair’s book goes to print. I’m sorry Em,” Ted apologized for the hundredth time.

“I know,” Emmett kissed Ted on the cheek. “Oh, what time is it? We have to pick up Michael.”

“We’re late, let’s go,” Ted released his friend. He grabbed his keys and they ran out the door.

Michael collected his luggage and walked impatiently to the exit. Where was Emmett? He smiled and chuckled to himself, Emmett hadn’t changed at all. He was always late. Michael decided that nothing could ruin his mood. He was in Rome; he; Michael Novotny and now he was a local in the one of the most romantic cities in the world. He looked around the airport at all the beautiful men. He’d taken this assignment to find the man of his dreams. Michael wanted to settle down with someone special. His job didn’t start for four weeks and he was determined to spend the time productively.

A very handsome man walked past him. That’s right, Michael thought, he was on the plane. He wondered if the man was a local coming home or a tourist. He watched the man get into a limmo and drive away.

“Michael.”

A voice jolted Michael back from his daydream. He looked up and Emmett was running towards him.

“Em,” he smiled and lunged at his friend. “You look fabulous.”

“Love, it’s wonderful for your complexion,” Emmett laughed. “Michael, this is Ted Schmidt,” Emmett introduced his friends.

Ted shook Michael’s hand. “Pleased to meet you,” Ted smiled. “How was your flight?”

“Great, I was so excited that I was coming, the time flew,” Michael laughed.

“Is this all your luggage?” Emmett asked.

“Yeah, where do we live? I can’t wait to see it. It sounds amazing.”

“Let’s go then,” Emmett smiled. They all grabbed a bag and hurried to the car. “I have to go in to the office for a while, this afternoon. Do you want to come or stay at home and settle in?”

“I want to do something special,” Michael smiled. “I want to make memories while I’m here.”

Ted laughed. Michael sounded like an idealist. This would be interesting. People’s impressions of Rome and the real Rome were very different. The traffic was awful as usual but it gave Emmett and Michael a chance to catch up. He really needed to go to the office and was relieved to finally drop Emmett and Michael off at the apartment. “I’ll see you both tonight. We have the reception tonight. I’ll pick you up at seven,” he smiled. “Don’t be late. Alistair hates when I’m late for functions.”

“We’ll be ready,” Emmett smiled as Ted drove off. He picked up two bags so Michael only had the one and led his friend up the stairs. He opened the door and ushered Michael inside. “You’ll need to bunk with me until I leave.” He led Michael through the apartment to his room.

Michael’s eyes were wide with amazement. “This is our apartment. It’s beautiful. Who else lives here?”

“Only Ted and Justin,” he smiled. “You remember, I told you about Justin. He works for a magazine. It’s his reception tonight. Someone he works with, Andrew; is going back to the States and it’s a farewell party. It’s a perfect chance for you to meet some people.”

“But this place is huge,” Michael marveled.

“That’s one of the perks of living in Rome,” Emmett laughed. “Now what are you going to do while I’m gone?”

“Can you drop me to an art gallery? I want to have a wander. What time will you be back?”

“I should be back by six and then we’ll have an hour to get ready before Ted is here to collect us. Are you ready to go?”

Michael was about to start his new life and he couldn’t wait. They grabbed a cab and Emmett gave the driver directions. He scribbled the address of the apartment on a piece of paper and handed it to Michael. “Just hand this to the driver and he can take you home. Do you have any money?”

“Yes I got some changed at the airport,” Michael smiled. “I’ll see you at six.”

“Have fun,” Emmett smiled. The cab sped off.

Michael smiled and walked into the Gallery. The Italian drivers were crazy.

Brian was unpacking his suits. He wasn’t sure how happy he was to be here. Restructuring an office like this wouldn’t be easy. He had three months to familiarize himself with the systems and make his recommendations. It wouldn’t be easy. Gabe didn’t want the local staff to know what was going on. He knew Jeremy would resent him for being here. He would be crazy if he didn’t. Jeremy had total control for a long time now and according to Gabe, he was happy here. He wondered what Jeremy would think about his wife’s meddling if he found out. Her voting stock made her requests for Jeremy to be reassigned to the New York office credible. Gabe said the information was classified. Jeremy was never to know. They had a job ready for him in the guise of a promotion. Jeremy was well connected in Rome and without his contacts they would be disadvantaged. He was here to acquire that contact base and he had three months to do it.

He wondered why Annabel Sherwood wanted to leave Rome so emphatically. She’d told Gabe that it was personal. Jeremy must be having an affair. Italian women were beautiful and Jeremy was certainly in the right industry to have as many beautiful women as he wanted.

When Brian finished putting everything away, he ordered room service. It arrived quickly and the waiter set his snack up on the terrace. The sun was glorious. Brian wondered what the nightlife was like here. There was a party for Andrew tonight. He would just sit and enjoy the sun for the rest of the afternoon. He’d decided not to go. He wanted to meet everyone in a business environment and if he went to the party it would dilute his perceived authority.

********

Antonio Constantine was a member of the Italian aristocracy. Of course, they had been dethroned a hundred of years ago or so but they still wielded great power in social circles. He was devilishly handsome, educated, refined and wealthy. He was the greatest catch in Rome. Many had tried to snag him but he liked being a playboy and playing the field. He dated both men and women, all eager to add the Constantine name to their own. The restaurant at the Gallery was one of the more fashionable places to dine.

He met Jeremy for lunch as he usually did on Fridays. They had become close friends over the years after meeting on the golf course one day. They had played together once a week ever since. Jeremy invited him to a reception tonight. He had nothing else to do so he’d agreed to go. He was supposed to go to the theater but his companion had taken ill. He really didn’t feel like the theater anyway. Lately he was restless and wasn’t sure why. Yes he did, he was bored. The same faces, the same things, the same, the same, the same.

Michael was sitting in front of a portrait and was mesmerized by its beauty. He glanced at his guidebook, transfixed by the history of the painting. He knew Rome was the right place for him. Michael’s eyes moved been the portrait and the guidebook, oblivious to everything around him.

Antonio noticed a handsome stranger soaking in one of the paintings he had donated to the Gallery. The way the man was glued to the portrait intrigued him. He wandered over to where the man was sitting and sat down beside him. He glanced casually at the man’s face and saw his eyes were filled with tears. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief, passing it to the man beside him.

Michael wiped his eyes and blew his nose. The painting had made him homesick for his family back in the States. It was very difficult for his Mom when he announced that he was moving to Rome. They were always so close, always in close contact. He even went for dinner three times a week. Michael knew his Mom would miss him terribly and as much as he wanted to start a new life, he missed her and his old one. He continued to stare at the painting but after a further few minutes looked up to see where the handkerchief had come from. “Oh, thanks,” he smiled.

“Have you broken away from your lover?” Antonio said softly.

“No, nothing like that, it was the painting. It made me think about my own mother and how much I miss her.”

Antonio smiled. Rarely, he found men were able to articulate feelings about their relationship with their mothers. Most men felt it was weak to admit that a woman had so much control over them. This was refreshing. He felt the same way about his own mother. She was the most important woman in his life although most of the time, like the masses, he was reticent to admit it. “How long have you been away from home?”

“Two days,” Michael laughed. “I guess that makes me ridiculous.”

“Not at all, are you living here now?”

“Yes. My new job starts in four weeks but I came early to learn my way around,” Michael smiled. “I don’t know many people here and I guess it’s a little more daunting than I expected.”

“I am Antonio Constantine.”

“Michael Novotny.”

“Well Michael Novotny, perhaps you would allow me to show you Rome?”

“Um, thank you, it’s very kind of you to offer,” Michael smiled. “I couldn’t impose though.”

“Nonsense, it is no imposition. I will be happy to show you the real Rome. Not the Rome in the tourist books. But alas, it will need to be tomorrow. I have promised a friend that I will attend his party tonight. If we had met earlier, we could have gone to the theater.”

“Yes I have a reception to attend myself tonight,” Michael smiled.

“Then Fate has solved out dilemma for us,” Antonio smiled. “I will pick you up tomorrow. Do you know Italy very well?”

“No, I only arrived today,” Michael smiled.

“Then I will take you in my plane to Pescara, tomorrow,” Antonio smiled. “It is very beautiful.”

“You have a plane?” Michael gasped.

“Many people have planes in Rome,” he looked at his watch. “I must go but first I will take you to your hotel.”

“I already have an apartment.” Michael pulled out his address. “I live here.”

Antonio smiled. “Then I will take you there.” He took Michael’s hand to lead him to his car. Michael felt his breath catch as they touched. How romantic, he may have found his knight in shining armor on his first day in Rome. Michael was quiet in the car, smiling periodically when he felt Antonio looking at him.

Justin was collecting the mail when the car stopped outside the apartment. Antonio walked Michael to the gate. He smiled at Justin. “Antonio,” Justin smiled back. “I see you have met my friend Michael.”

“Yes, he is charming. We met at the gallery after Jeremy left,” he turned to Michael. “I will call for you at ten, tomorrow” he kissed Michael’s hand. “Justin, I will see you tonight.” Antonio released Michael’s hand and left.

“You know him?” Michael asked.

“Yes, very well,” Justin smiled. “Hurry, we need to get ready. You’re late and Ted will be here soon. Alistair freaks if Ted is late,” Justin laughed.

“Where will you see Antonio tonight?” Michael asked.

“He’ll be at the party for Andrew. He’s a good friend of Jeremy’s, my boss.”

Michael smiled to himself. Fate was certainly helping him and Antonio together. They hurried upstairs and Michael changed quickly. He wanted to pump Justin for information about Antonio before the party. Justin seemed to take forever in the shower but finally he could ask questions.

“Antonio is gorgeous,” he started. “I thought he was so sweet and sensitive. He kindly offered to take me sightseeing tomorrow.”

“Pescara in his plane?” Justin smiled.

“How did you know?” Michael asked.

“That’s where he usually takes someone on a first date,” Justin laughed.

“I don’t understand.”

“Antonio is a playboy. He tricks in style. After he fucks you, you won’t see him again for dust.”

“But he seemed so genuine,” Michael objected.

Justin laughed. “He does, doesn’t he?” His mind reflected on his own trip to Pescara in Antonio’s plane, so many years ago. “He will fly you down there and magically the plane will have engine trouble and you will need to stay the night. He will then of course fuck your brains out, you will fall in love with him and when you get home he will never call again. He is renowned for it. He’s a great guy, he just isn’t relationship material,” Justin laughed.

Michael felt like he had been kicked in the stomach.

Justin continued dressing but saw Michael’s disappointment. “You really like him, huh?”

Michael nodded. “I did,” he said sadly.

Justin pulled on his jacket. “Em, are you ready?” he called out.

Emmett ran into Justin’s room. “Ready,” he smiled.

“Michael met Antonio today and he offered to take him to Pescara in his plane tomorrow,” Justin smiled.

“Oh honey, save yourself the heartache,” Emmett hugged Michael.

“He really likes him, Em,” Justin smiled. “Do you think between us we know enough about Antonio to give him a hand?”

Emmett laughed. “I think so. If Michael wants Antonio, he should have him.”

Justin smiled. “You would have to stick to the plan, if you vary, he’s smart enough to work it out,” Justin warned.

“I’ll stick to it. I really like him,” Michael smiled. “What’s the plan?”

“We’ll talk about it tonight,” Justin laughed. “Come on that’s Ted honking the horn.”

Michael hadn’t heard it before but now he could hear a horn blasting continuously. They hurried downstairs before Ted had a conniption.

********

The party was boring. There were no unattached men there at all. Antonio spent the night dancing with the wives of his friends. He smiled at Michael early in the night and warned him that he would not be able to spend time with him. He told Michael that he had business to discuss and then ignored him for the rest of the evening. It wasn’t a total loss because it gave them time to formulate the Get Antonio Plan. Ted laughed when the boys told him. Antonio was a good friend of Alistair’s as well. Ted had even made the trip to Pescara himself about ten years ago.

Justin was used to these parties. Jeremy was at his most charming and he usually danced with Annabel most of the night. He purposely ignored Justin so there would be no suspicion that there was anything between them. At eleven, Justin was over it. He’d had enough. Annabel was particularly clingy tonight.

“Let’s go somewhere else and dance. These happy hetero parties give me the shits,” Justin growled. He knew that even though he and Jeremy, were a couple, he was sick of being Jeremy’s secret and these parties always made it ten times worse. Jeremy would be sorry and attentive tomorrow and Justin would forgive him but tonight he wanted to be angry about it.

“Let’s go to Max’s,” Ted suggested.

“No, let’s go to Muccassassina. I need to let off some steam. We need to stop at the farmacia on the way.” Justin turned and walked to the exit.

Ted and Emmett looked at each other and herded Michael to the exit. Justin was obviously angrier with Jeremy than usual. If Justin was looking for condoms, he was pissed. Ted hoped Justin would chicken out as the night went on. He told Alistair he was leaving and was formally dismissed by his master. Alistair had witnessed Jeremy’s behavior and knew Justin would be upset.

They grabbed a cab, found Justin’s supplies and went to the club.

Justin pulled off his jacket and undid the buttons on his shirt down to his waist. He couldn’t remember Annabel ever being so friendly before. At one point, Justin even saw her hand slid down Jeremy’s back into the back of his pants. Jeremy was momentarily startled but then smiled at her and continued his conversation. What the fuck was that? They hadn’t slept together for years or at least that was what Jeremy had told him. Then, later on the dance floor, it was bad enough they were dancing close but he was sure he saw Jeremy get hard. Asshole, Justin thought.

Ted knew Justin was feeling reckless and he was worried. Periodically Justin and Jeremy would tiff but Justin had never tricked before. He’d seen Jeremy dancing with Annabel, grinding his cock against her leg. He’d hoped Justin hadn’t but he must have. Shit. They found a table and Justin dragged Emmett up to dance. Ted kept Michael close. This wasn’t the kinda place to leave Michael unattended. He didn’t have the experience to cope here. The men were gorgeous but they were all players. If one wanted to trick in Rome, this was the place.

“Justin looks angry,” Michael commented.

“He is. Do you remember a guy called Jeremy?”

Michael nodded. “His wife was Annabel, she seemed nice,” Michael smiled.

“Jeremy has been Justin’s boyfriend for the last five years.”

“But he was um…..with his wife ah….um.”

“Exactly,” Ted shook his head and watched as Justin relaxed into the music. The men started to swarm around him, like moths to a flame.

“Hey, that guy came in on the plane with me,” Michael pointed to a chestnut haired man closing in on Justin fast. “He is gorgeous, look at those eyes.”

Ted looked up and saw the most beautiful hazel eyes he had ever seen. Fuck, he watched the man push through the men near Justin and pull Justin into his arms. This would mean trouble, he could tell.

Justin felt someone take hold of him and pull him against a hard body. He opened his eyes and felt his breath catch. Fuck, this guy was amazing. His skin began to tingle as he felt the man explore his back under his shirt. Justin shivered as the man’s long slender fingers slid through the perspiration on his skin. Jeremy had never been one for foreplay but this guy was driving Justin crazy. He could feel the guy’s hard on pressing against his own. Their lips touched and Justin would swear later that he saw stars.

The guy whispered in Justin’s ear. “We could go to the backroom but I would rather take you back to my hotel so I can make love to you all night. What’s you pleasure?”

Justin’s cock was straining for release. Could he wait till they went back to the hotel? If he was gonna cheat on Jeremy, he wanted it to be worth it. “Let’s go,” Justin smiled.

Justin forgot about his friends and allowed the guy to lead him out the exit.

Ted stood up, not sure what to do. “Stay here and don’t talk to anyone,” he yelled at Michael as he bolted towards the exit. Emmett met him halfway there.

“Where did Justin go?” Emmett asked concerned.

“He left with that guy, let’s try and stop him,” Ted pushed through the crowd to the exit with Emmett in hot pursuit. They made it outside in time to see a big stretch limousine pull away into the traffic. Ted sighed. He hoped Justin would be okay. They knew nothing about this guy except he arrived on the plane with Michael. What if he was an axe murderer? Shit.
