Justin sat staring out the window. His parents were fighting again. That’s all they seemed to do lately. He looked down at his acceptance letter. He had worked so hard to get in. PIFA didn’t take many new students each year and he even received a scholarship. His dad wasn’t even pleased for him, still complaining about his sexual preference. He would never understand him being gay so Justin wondered why he chose to fight about it all the time. It wasn’t as if he could change it to please him. It should have been about how hard he worked and how proud he was for having such a talented son, but it wasn’t. He was who he was and his dad was just going to have to accept it.

When he went away to school next week he would be living with his Uncle Matt. Justin was excited, his uncle didn’t care if he was gay, green or calathumpian and was proud of his achievement.

Matt Morgan was his mother’s younger brother. He was twenty seven and worked for an advertising agency in Pittsburgh. He had been out to visit them many times but Justin had never been to Pittsburgh. When he had been accepted at PIFA, the first person he rang was Matt. He knew Matt would let him live with him because he knew his father wouldn’t help him with living expenses. He wanted Justin to go to Dartmouth where he had gone and his father before him. Staying at Matt’s was in his budget and he was grateful when Matt suggested it. He would need to get a job but at least all his tuition was covered by the scholarship.

Jennifer Taylor burst into the room shattering Justin’s dream like state. “Get your coat and pack a bag, we’re leaving,” she said angrily.

Justin looked at his mother stunned by her words.

“Hurry up Justin, our flights in two hours so you better hurry,” she turned and left a shocked Justin to collect his belongings. He wasn’t even sure where they were flying to but he knew by her tone not to ask.

Jennifer threw the contents of her wardrobe into space bags and extracted the air with her pump. By the time she was finished, all her clothes packed into two suitcases. She looked pleased. She would not spend another night with that asshole. She was sick of his controlling ways and his attitude towards Justin was unforgivable. Justin had worked so hard and he wasn’t even prepared to say congratulations. It was just the final straw. Things between them hadn’t been good for a long time but she was prepared to put up with it. Craig’s attitude about Justin’s recent admission had brought everything to a head and tonight it had blown. Her husband was a homophobic prick that she wouldn’t allow to make her son be ashamed of whom he was. If he had such a problem dealing with their son he could be her son that she was proud of, for what he had achieved and who he was.

Craig walked in to their bedroom slowly and sat on the bed. “Come on Jen, I don’t want you to go,” he said softly.

“Then go in there and tell your son that you are proud of him,” she demanded.

“You know I can’t do that. Justin will go away to school soon and it will be the two of us again.” Craig sat looking at the floor.

“No Craig, I’m going with him, so it will just be you.” She picked up her bags and walked out.

Matt paced at the airport waiting for the flight to arrive. Jen had rung him and said both her and Justin were coming to live in Pittsburgh. He wondered what that asshole had done to make Jen finally decide to leave him. She was only thirty five; maybe she could start again and find a good man this time. Craig Taylor had always been an ass and if Jen hadn’t fallen pregnant, she would never have married him. He didn’t remember much about it except his mother begging Jen to not ruin her life and marry him, but she had and at least she was getting out now.

“Will you sit fucking down; you are wearing a track in the carpeting.” A voice startled Matt from his thoughts. He walked towards the handsome man’s voice and sat beside him.

Brian put his arm around his shoulders to comfort him. “She will be fine now she has made the change. I only know what you’ve told me but he sounds like a jerk.”

Matt looked at his best friend and smiled. “He is a jerk.”

They both laughed as the announcement of the arrival echoed through the airport terminal.

“Fuck Gate 23, come on it’s a hike,” Brian laughed as he grabbed his hand and pulled Matt along.

They sprinted to the gate just as they were disembarking.

“Jen,” Matt embraced his sister. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine honey; I should have done this year’s ago. Don’t worry, I’m fine,” Jennifer smiled at her brother.

Justin was standing quietly at his mother’s side. “Hi Matt, how’s things?” he said nervously.

Matt slapped his on the back and then hugged him. “Great buddy.” He turned to Brian. “This is my nephew Justin that I told you about.”

Brian smiled as he looked at the handsome young man. “Matt’s told me how proud he is of you Justin. A scholarship to one of the best art schools in the country, you must be one hell of an artist.”

“I hope to be one day,” Justin said modestly.

Brian laughed and looked at Jennifer, extending his hand. “I’m Brian Kinney, pleased to finally meet you.”

Jennifer took his hand and pulled him in for a hug. “I know how important you are to Matt. I’m so glad to finally meet you Brian.”

Brian laughed. “So I’m important to you huh? He looked at Matt smiling.

“His head is big enough Jen, don’t encourage his ego to spread,” Matt laughed and hit Brian in the arm. “Let’s get the bags and get these two home.” Matt wrapped his arm around his sister’s waist as they walked out.

Justin and Brian followed behind.

Justin was afraid to look at Brian. He was the most beautiful man he had ever seen and his reaction to Brian was obvious. He was careful to keep his bag in front of him as he walked and hoped Brian hadn’t noticed his lack of control.

Brian followed Jen and Matt smiling. He knew Matt’s nephew was gay but he didn’t realize he was so young, blond and beautiful. His eyes were bright blue and Brian couldn’t help notice his current problem. He decided to just pretend he didn’t notice, not wanting the kid to be any more uncomfortable than he obviously was already. He shook his head, still smiling, remembering how hard it was to be young.

Brian sat behind his desk throwing a soft ball through the ring behind his door.

Matt sat opposite at his own desk shaking his head. “What about “Take Sleepy time and buzz all day.”

Brian looked at his in disbelief. “It sucks.”

Matt looked at his friend, totally frustrated. “Who in their right mind would name an herbal upper ‘Sleepy time’.”

Brian laughed. “The same dickhead who is prepared to spend a million dollars advertising it, that’s who.”

“Do you have any words of wisdom you want to share?” Matt asked.

Brian threw another ball through the hoop. “Want to play one on one?”

“He will be here tomorrow and we don’t even have a slogan yet,” Matt reminded him.

“I don’t have a clue but we’ll come up with something, we always do. Let’s go and shoot hoops, it helps me think.” Brian stood up. “Come on, we need a break.”

Matt didn’t have a clue either so shooting hoops was better than sitting thinking and getting nowhere.

Both Brian and Matt worked for one of the best ad agencies in Pittsburgh, Ryder and Associates. They were the top executive team but today it wasn’t showing. This product was driving them crazy. They walked down the corridor to the room at the end. This was the playroom. This was where most of their brilliant ideas were conceived. Brian hoped that either an idea that was usable or lightening would strike them. At this point, he didn’t mind which. They changed out of their suits and into singlets and shorts and began to play.

Ted sat at his desk listening to the pounding that was going on over his head. His office was directly below the playroom and if Brian and Matt were shooting hoops that meant that they were trying to think about a difficult account. He took the aspirin out of the draw. From the sound of it he was going to need it.

After two hours of solid banging and pounding, he decided he couldn’t take it any longer. He tidied his desk and left for the afternoon, via the playroom. He opened the door to see both men fighting for the ball. “Foul,” he said loudly.

Both Matt and Brian called out. “On who?”

“On me, what are you doing? You have been playing for hours and you’ve given me a headache,” Ted said exasperated.

“That’s it,” yelled Matt. “If you want to be able to play for hours, take Sleep Time.”

Brian and Matt ‘high five’s’ each other and collapsed on the floor exhausted.

Ted looked at the two sweaty men lying in front of him, their chests heaving as they struggled for breath. He started to speak and then changed his mind, shook his head and closed the door as he left.

“I think he needs to get laid,” Matt announced. “Maybe you should fuck him.”

Brian shook his head and laughed. “Not me, why don’t you?”

“He’s not my type but I did meet a lovely girl called Gretchen this morning at Starbucks,” Matt laughed. Just your type, except for one notable exception. Five, ten, blonde hair and a body, hmmm, great ass too but alas for Brian, no dick. My type,” Matt swatted Brian on the ass.

“So when do I get to meet the fair Gretchen?” Brian asked.

“I invited her for drinks with the guys tonight at Flannigan’s.”

“What happened to Susan?”

“That was last week,” Matt laughed.

“Shame, I liked her and she lasted two weeks, you can’t even keep them straight. The one before was only a week, that was Felicity. You are such a whore.”

Matt laughed. “No I’m a stud, you’re the whore.”

They began to wrestle on the floor.

Matt and Brian had been friends since high school. Brian was a freshman and Matt was a sophomore. They were on the soccer and basketball teams together and became fast friends, attending the same college and eventually working for the same agency after they graduated.

“I know you just want my body,” Brian teased as he dived on Matt again.

“Pigs may fly too. I secretly dream about beating the crap out of you,” replied Matt wriggling out of his grasp and rolling on Brian again.

The door opened and Marty Ryder peered in. “Did you get it?”

“If you want to play for hours, take Sleepy Time for that extra little buzz,” Brian smiled as he stood up.

“Great, give it to the Art Department, good work guys, I’ll see you tomorrow. Have a good night,” Marty smiled as he closed the door. The playroom was the best idea he ever had. When it came to the creative process, Brian and Matt were his stars and if they needed a playroom to shine, he didn’t care as long as they produced.

“I need a shower,” said Brian. “So do you or Gretchen may not last the night with the way you smell at the moment,” Brian laughed.

Matt sniffed under his arm and agreed. They would need to hurry or they would be late.
